Dominion Theology and Reconstructionists

Dominion Theology is closely related to “reclaiming the Culture”, and another belief system, “Reconstuctionism.” By wresting the text of Genesis 1:26, this group justifies their agenda of taking dominion over the world system (culture, government, education, etc.) as a biblical mandate.

“And God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.'”—Genesis 1:26

Does this verse sound like a mandate from God to the human race to take dominion over the world system: culture, education, government, people, money and power?

Satan, who is now the prince of this world, gained dominion over this present world system when Adam and Eve disobeyed God (See Genesis chapter 3). In the New Testament, Satan offered Jesus the kingdoms, their power and glory, if Jesus would worship Satan.

“And the devil, taking him [Jesus] up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, ‘All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.'”—Luke 4:5–7

Quoting scripture, Jesus rejected Satan’s offer:

“And Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.'”—Luke 4:8

Could it be that Satan is still offering men the glory of the kingdoms of this world that Jesus rejected?

One day, Jesus will take dominion of what is rightfully His; but that isn’t our job as followers of Jesus Christ and of His Book.

Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.”
— Psalm 145:13

“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”
—Revelation 1:6

After the world was destroyed by flood, God said to Noah and his family:

Psalms 8 talks about the responsibility God has given mankind:

“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?…Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.”—Psalm 8:4, 6–9

“But Jesus called them unto him, and said, ‘Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.'”—Matthew 20:25

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience…”—Ephesians 2:2

“‘…the prince of this world is judged.'”—John 16:11

Jesus, the true Prince of life, Saviour, and King of Kings:

“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.”
—Act 5:31
