    71. Education can play an outstanding role in promoting the inculturation of the Gospel.

    …Catholic centers of education, and those which, although non-denominational, are clearly inspired by Catholic principles, will be able
    to engage in authentic evangelization only if at all levels including that
    of the university they clearly preserve their Catholic orientation.

    The content of the education they impart should make constant reference to Jesus Christ and his message as the Church presents it in her dogmatic and moral teaching.

    Only in this way will they train truly Christian leaders in the different spheres of human activity, and in society, especially in politics, economics, science, art and philosophical reflection. 267

    Hence, it is essential that the Catholic university be truly both things at once: a university and Catholic...

    Pastoral work in Catholic universities will therefore be given special attention: it must encourage a commitment to the apostolate on the part of the students themselves, so that they can become

    the evangelizers of the university world. 269

    In addition, cooperation between Catholic universities throughout America needs to be encouraged, for their mutual enrichment; 270

    this will help put into effect, at the university level too, the principle of solidarity and interchange between the peoples of the whole continent.

    In the overall work of the new evangelization, the educational sector occupies a place of honor.

    For this reason, the activity of all Catholic teachers, including those working in non-denominational schools, should be encouraged.

    I also make an urgent appeal to men and women religious not to abandon this field which is so important for the new evangelization. 274

    Teachers and administrators, whether in universities or schools, have the duty and privilege to ensure that students receive instruc-

    in the Gospel and upheld by the Church’s Magisterium, shapes

Roman Catholic Education
To help the pope out with his goal of evangelization through education,
is the Roman Catholic education system with 200,000 Catholic educators,
7.6 million students and 8000 Catholic elementary and secondary schools,
religious education programs, seminaries, colleges and universities. (ncea.org/about/index.asp)

As far as higher education, there are 245 Catholic higher education institutions
in the United States. In 2006, it was estimated there were more than 686,000
students enrolled in 215 Catholic higher education institutions in the US.

According to the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education, approximately 12.5% of the world’s Catholic colleges and universities are located in the United States. There are approximately 1,861 Catholic colleges and universities worldwide.

Ignatius Loyola, The Society of Jesus, and Jesuit Educators
Major help for the Pope and his goal of evangelization through education has been in place since the mid-1500s from The Society of Jesus or Jesuits started by the Spaniard, Ignatius Loyola, also the originator of the Jesuits’ Spiritual Exercises. Considered Ignatius’ greatest contribution to the Church, the Spiritual Exercises are the basis for the Spiritual Disciplines of today’s emergent church.

St. Ignatius of Loyola was first and foremost a man of
God who in his life put God, his greatest glory and his
greatest service, first. He was a profoundly prayerful
man for whom the daily celebration of the Eucharist
was the heart and crowning point of his day.

The Jesuits were a Catholic order founded in 1534, by
Ignatius Loyola, a Spaniard, their chief aim being the
complete extermination of Protestantism. They called
their Order the Society of Jesus.

Responsible only to the Pope and exempted from all
other jurisdiction, they bound themselves by oath to unconditional obedience to the Pope.

Country, friends, personal interest, even private opinion and conscience were nothing; the rules of the Order were everything to them.

They specialized in providing a high standard of education for the sons of the nobility, and by this means their influence was enormous.

They penetrated into all the relationships of life and obtained possession of secret information that would further their aims.

The most notorious principle of the Society of Jesus was, “the end justifies the means”. Hence they would engage in murder
if they judged that the Catholic Church would benefit by it…”
