2000 Years of Deception and Error, Part 4G: Constantine, Augustine, Chalcedon, Aquinas 2007

Continuing with Part 5 regarding the error at

5. The belief that the Gentile church replaces Israel, and with it the thought that it is the church’s responsibility to bring in or advance the Kingdom of God.

It was difficult for me to discern from the chalcedon site exactly what they believe about Israel. Both Reconstructionist and Reformed thought (which thinking is supported on the site) believe that the church has replaced Israel,
so I am inclined to think that the folk at also believe that the church has replaced Israel.

It seems to me that there is a relationship between thinking that the church has replaced Israel and the idea that therefore the church needs to live under the Old Testament laws and ways and that it is their job to be bringing in the Kingdom get people to obey God’s law so the kingdom is ready for Jesus. (Not that this is biblical thought, just my observation of what has/is happening.)

“Because we strongly emphasize the authority of Biblical law, holding it to be a verbal description of God’s character, and because we hold that Biblical law should govern every area of man’s life and thought…”

“Because we believe that the Bible should apply to all of life, including the state; and because we believe that the Christian state should enforce Biblical civil law; and finally, because we believe that the responsibility of Christians is to exercise dominion in the earth for God’s glory…We do not believe that politics or the state are a chief sphere of dominion.

“…We believe in regeneration, not in revolution. Men are not changed fundamentally by politics, but by the power of God. Men’s hearts are changed by regeneration (Jn. 3:3). They are translated from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God’s dear Son (Col. 1:13). From that point, they progressively work to reorient their lives and every sphere they touch in terms of God’s holy, infallible Word. Long-term, pervasive social change is the result of extensive regeneration and obedience by the people of God. This means, of course, that there can be no Christian society of any significance or longevity unless a large number of its members are Christians.”

My Comment
Is this double talk? Why do they emphasis Biblical law? “They progressively work to reorient their lives?” Biblical law did not work for Israel. Why? Because their hearts were desperately wicked like ours. Why do they think Biblical law will work for Gentiles?

GOD says

“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.“—Galatians 3:10–14
“We do believe that the state one day will be Christian, but this no way implies that the role of the state is to Christianize its citizens…Our objective, therefore, in supporting Christian political involvement is to scale down the massive state in Western democracies, reducing it to its Biblical limits…”

My comment
One day the state will be Christian? How are they going to reduce Western democracies to their biblical limits? Is that in the Bible?

The Ministry of Chalcedon
“We believe that the whole Word of God must be applied to all of life. It is not only our duty as individuals, families and churches to be Christian, but it is also the duty of the state, the school, the arts and sciences, law, economics, and every other sphere to be under Christ the King. Nothing is exempt from His dominion. We must live by His Word, not our own.”

My Comment
Where is this in the Bible? God fills us with His Holy Spirit so we can tell other sinners that Jesus will rescue them from hell, too. We are not told to bring the state, school, arts under the dominion of Jesus. This group has also torqued the meaning of the word “dominion” as it is in the Bible. See a past blog: dominion-theology-and-reconstructionists/

This is what God says in His BOOK

“For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.“—Romans 10:2–4

“For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.“—Isaiah 9:16

“But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.”—Isaiah 41:8, 9

“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.“—Isaiah 43:1

“Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me. I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.”—Isaiah 44:21, 22

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.“—Isaiah 49:16

2. The denial of a future, thousand-year, physical reign of Jesus Christ on the earth.

“Because we affirm postmillennialism…Because we believe that Christ’s first coming established His kingdom (Mt. 3:2), and His church is presently energized to advance that kingdom
(Mt. 28:18-20)…”

“…Jesus Christ already ‘brought in the kingdom’ at His first coming. His glorious reign was formalized at His ascension (Dan. 7:13-14), after which He showered His royal gifts on His people so that they could advance His kingdom in the earth (Ac. 2:17-18, 30-33)…”

“Chalcedon’s activities include foundational and leadership roles in Christian reconstruction. Our emphasis on the Cultural or Dominion Mandate, Genesis 1:28, and the necessity of a return to Biblical Law has been a crucial factor in the challenge to Humanism by Christians in this country and elsewhere. Chalcedon’s involvement in and commitment to Christian education began with its inception when founder Rousas John Rushdoony pinpointed the Christian and home schools as the most important institutions in reversing the influence of secular Humanism.”

My Comments

These folk have torqued scripture to come up with a reconstructionist postmillennial eschatology. As you read above, they believe Jesus has established His kingdom already, and the church is energized to advance that kingdom.

In my opinion, the postmillennial belief combined with Replacement theology (the belief that Israel has been replaced by the church) and their ideas about the state/church has allowed for their belief of “Reconstructionism.”

Rather than preach the gospel to every creature like Jesus told us to do, they are putting their energies into getting people to obey Biblical law.

Perhaps you would be interested in reading a book that uses both the Old and New Testament to discuss the Redemption (Rapture) of the church by our Redeemer. You can read ‘The Manasseh Effect: A Biblical Case for the Rapture of the Church” by John Higgins and download the chart online for free.

Jesus did not tell us to set up a church system or to reform the American government or to Christianize our culture. He came to rescue people from hell, and He wants us to spread that good news to others.

From the BOOK

“And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”—1 John 5:19

“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”
—John 18:36

This is what Christ’s kingdom on earth will be like. Does it sound like it has happened or is happening? Does it sound like Jesus needs help establishing the kingdom?

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.“—Isaiah 9:6, 7

“But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”—Psalm 37:11

“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”—Acts 17:30, 31

“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.“—2 Corinthians 3:6

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world {not government} unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.“—2 Corinthians 5:19

2000 Years of Deception and Error, Part 4B: Constantine, Augustine, Chalcedon, Aquinas 2007

The next few posts will be discussing how the errors and unbiblical thinking of Constantine, Augustine, the Council of Chalcedon and Aquinas has influenced, Reconstructionists who believe in reclaiming the culture and who have had great influence on the homeschooling community and the “Christian” right of our government, implementing their belief system through homeschooling and promoting our “Christian Nation.”

The theology/doctrine of this group has bothered me for a long time. I now understand that part of their theology leaves out the Holy Spirit (even though they make mention of the Holy Spirit once on their site), and that they apparently agree with Aquinas that man’s intelligence was not affected by the fall and thus give man’s reasonings and writings equal footing with God’s Holy Word.

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”—Romans 16:17, 18

2000 Years of Deception and Error, Part 2A Constantine & Augustine

Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official state religion of Rome, uniting church and state, thus making himself the head of the church, giving himself the authority to call church councils, to decide everyone was Christian
(or would be outwardly) and kill folk claiming to be Christians because either he thought they were not acting “Christian,” or they would not agree with his “Christian” beliefs and requirements. A church hierarchy resulted, and by
416 AD, infant baptism was required by Roman law.

Although influenced by Greek thought (dualism and philosophy), Ambrose (who wanted to use the church to control the state), his time as a Manichaean, and Anthony, a Desert Father, Augustine’s writings have formed a major belief system for both the Reformed Church and the Roman Catholic Church.

Augustine justified Constantine’s unscriptural marriage between church and state with the false doctrine he wrote in The Visible and Invisible Church. According to Augustine, the church could use violence to convert people or force people back to the church’s thinking. He encouraged the idea that the church replaced Israel. He changed to amillennial thinking denying a future, 1000 year, physical reign of Jesus Christ on earth, and claiming the church was currently living in the millennium. He wrote that unbaptized infants go to hell, bringing about the unbiblical practice of baptizing babies, who are not old enough to know to repent, but who do, according to 2 Samuel 12:23, go to heaven.

Constantine’s Political Kingdom of both the state and the church, combined with the theology Augustine wrote, helped thrust Europe into at least a millennium of unrest (NOT like the 1000 years reign of Jesus Christ promised in the Bible) because of the vying for power between the Roman Catholic Church and the political rulers of the European countries. Hundreds of thousands of people died physically as the result of the wars or for not cooperating with the state religion. How many people are dead spiritually because of the deception and error handed down to us from Constantine and Augustine, which continues in our time.

Where is God, Jesus, the holy Spirit, and the BOOK?

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”—Colossians 2:8

“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight…”
—John 18:36

“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”—Mark 1:15

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
—Acts 4:12

“Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”—John 1:13

[King David speaking after the death of his newborn son.]”But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”—2 Samuel 12:23

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah…I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
—Jeremiah 31:31–33

“I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.”
—Romans 11:1

“That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel.”—Ephesians 3:6, 7

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”
—Revelation 20:6

Two Thousand Years of Deception and Error, Part 1 The First Century AD

Deception has been around since Satan tempted Eve in the garden. But my next six or so blogs will concentrate on the last 2000 years of deception of/in the church, with the goal of showing how the errors/wrong doctrine through the centuries are still with us and affect us today. Hence we are vulnerable to the agendas, influence, and control of the kingdom of darkness from sources that say they are Christian, but their doctrine is not of God.

This post will present some verses from God’s Word that show both the truth and error that was around in the first century. I didn’t realize until I started looking up verses just how many there are which talk both about the deception that was happening in the first century and the deception that would happen in years to come. Hopefully, this will challenge you to check out God’s Word for the many other passages which instruct in discerning truth and error.

From The BOOK

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins…
—1 John 4:10

“…But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.“—Galatians 1:3–8

“I say then, Hath God cast away his people [Israel]? God forbid…God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.”—Romans 1:1, 2

“…ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ…and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.”—Jude 4, 16

“…Keep yourselves in the love of God…”—Jude 21

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling…To the only wise God our Saviour…”—Jude 24, 25

“…they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures…”—2 Peter 3:16

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.”
—1 John 2:15

“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”
—1 John 2:22, 23

“...try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”—1 John 4:1

“…Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.“—1 John 4:2, 3

Church of Ephesus: “…thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.”—Revelation 2:1–6

[“Nicolaitans” means “victors over the people.” So their deeds or doctrine possibly refer to a religious hierarchal system that controls the laity/common people.]

Church in Pergamos: “…I know…where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is…thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam…”—Revelation 2:12–16

Church in Thyatira: “…thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols…”—Revelation 2:20

Church in Philadelphia: “…hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name…”—Revelation 3:7–10

Church of the Laodiceans: “…I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot...I will spue thee out of my mouth…”
—Revelation 3:14, 16

Replacement Theology

Replacement Theology says incorrectly that the church has replaced Israel and that the promises in the Old Testament meant for Israel, now belong to the church.

The result of this philosophy is that the leaders of churches with this unbiblical belief—whether Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical, or Emergent—feel that it is their responsibility to set up God’s kingdom here on earth.

Replacement Theology results in a social gospel. When combined with Dominion Theology, RT becomes an agenda for making everything (including culture and government) Christian, in preparation, they think, to have everything ready for Jesus to come back and set up his Kingdom. These folk are ignoring the fact that God’s Kingdom is within and that ONLY Jesus, the Redeemer can set things right.

What does the Book say?

“Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, “He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.'”—Jeremiah 3:10

“Thus saith the LORD;’If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done,’ saith the LORD.”
—Jeremiah 31:37

“—behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”—Luke 17:21

“And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”—Luke 1:33

“And again, Esaias saith, ‘There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.'”—Romans 15:12

“‘…The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
—Revelation 11:15
